The Global Health Body Sounds Alert Over Severe Lack of Obesity Medications
Fewer than a tenth of individuals who could benefit from obesity jabs such as Wegovy have access to them, warns the global health agency as it publishes its initial guidance on the therapies.
Given more than one billion individuals worldwide now obese, it is urging broader and more equitable access to these injectable treatments.
Based on projections, over two billion are projected to be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.
"The latest guidelines acknowledges that obesity is a chronic disease that can be treated with comprehensive and continuous care," remarked the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
High costs, limited production capacity, and supply-chain constraints are major obstacles to universal access to the jabs that can help people shift considerable weight, notes the agency.

Despite the present best projected case, the production of these medications could only cover approximately 100 million people – less than 10% of the global need, per the WHO.
The guideline urges nations and manufacturers to widen access, via approaches like voluntary licensing.
The intellectual property rights on a key compound – the main component of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy – is scheduled to end in a number of countries in 2026.

The injections replicate a natural hormone to delay gastric emptying, curb appetite and enhance feelings of fullness so people consume fewer calories.
Patients typically begin shedding pounds in the initial weeks of commencing the weekly injections.
