Similar to Storm Claudia hit the northern region the prior day, City blew United aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a convincing three-nil win for the City coach's side due to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that firmly established their title credentials as they strengthened their position at the league summit.

Consecutive Defeats for Manchester United

This scoreline signalled back-to-back WSL defeats for the United manager's side for the initial occasion since May 2024, putting them a significant margin off the table toppers with their trophy ambitions severely dented.

United’s capability to balance league and continental football with a limited roster has been a frequently analyzed subject since they secured entry to the Champions League. Reviewing the calendar, it always seemed this was the matchday that would fully examine this ability. Regrettably for the away side, they seemed weary throughout, the historic win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having had an impact.

Team Changes

Marc Skinner had attempted to rotate the squad with a several alterations. Toone, Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all provided vigor, although the dropping of the on-form Melvine Malard to the bench caused surprise.

The hosts, in opposition, have fewer loading issues. Jeglertz made one adjustment from the previous win over Everton with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since returning from a fitness issue.

Overpowering Start

The influential Casparij picked the ball up on the wing before providing a pinpoint ground pass for Shaw to tap home. Shortly later, they had a third goal after a rapid shift in the ball saw Hemp allowed the opportunity to strike a shot home from range.

Final Period

The clearest substitution came from Skinner at the half-time as Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was ineffective to alter the outcome of the game. Ex- City player Jess Park came closest, hitting the post, but the away team were offensively poor and were unable to record a single shot on goal.

The home side, meanwhile, could have added to their advantage when a delightful Vivianne Miedema through ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it was insignificant to the winning team. Previously unable to beat any team who placed above them the previous campaign, City's side now have victories against the Gunners and Manchester United to place them in a favorable situation after the opening fixtures.
