Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People using these treatments must be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

People who have stopped the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled a patient.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural support.
