European football's governing body has initiated a disciplinary case concerning Chelsea's the Portuguese international after he pushed over a young stadium attendant during a Champions League loss against Paris St‑Germain.
The 26-year-old, Neto, knocked the attendant in stoppage time of Wednesday's knockout stage fixture in Paris – where Chelsea lost 5-2 – which caused the boy falling from a stool.
It sparked a heated exchange between both sets of players.
Officials stated action has been taken against Neto for "unsporting behaviour" as per the official rules.
"Disciplinary officials will make a ruling on this case in the coming days," UEFA announced.
The Chelsea player expressed regret over his actions and blamed getting swept up "in the intensity of the match" while he was attempting to get back the match ball.
"This is out of character for me. It happened in the passion of the game and I offer my apologies. I gave him my shirt. I feel terrible about it - I feel I have to apologise to him," Neto told the media.
"My French is not very good, and [Portugal team-mate] Vitinha stepped in and explained to him that it was a momentary lapse.
"At the end he accepted the apology and I presented him with my jersey and said sorry many times. He understood it was a mistake and was content with the outcome."
Chelsea face PSG next Tuesday for the return fixture, following Newcastle's visit to Stamford Bridge on Saturday in domestic competition.
