“It was unfortunate. It was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
Jones additionally emphasized that the signal was completely accidental, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the wrong digit,” he remarked. “The action was accidentally done. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”

This incident isn’t the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Recent examples include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
